The High Plains Drifter event on September 14th-15th, 2024, was a success for Bare Bones Racing. We finished 9th in class B and 19th overall
In the BFEGP, the Wilwood rear brake bracket failed and for this race I designed and had manufactured a new bracket that worked well. However, we encountered an issue with the front brake pads wearing at an extreme angle. Discussions with people in the paddock revealed that we had the front calipers installed backwards, with the right on the left and vice versa. We made the switch on Sunday morning and sent the car out with a set of used pads, which seemed to fix the issue. For future reference, the big piston on a caliper needs to be on the trailing edge of the rotor.
Getting to the race is always stressful, but I always have fun at the race. Becky stepped in to help with my costume for tech.
We arrived at the track early enough on Thursday to secure a great paddock spot, allowing us to paddock with Prescription Racing and Jager Bull. We aim to get this spot for the next race.
Although it wasn't the best race, it was still a good one. The 24 Hours of LeMONs fields are becoming increasingly competitive, and the cars are getting faster. We had a few returning regular drivers: Ryan Priselac, Jason Forrester, and Anthony Forrester. We also had new drivers to Miss Vici: Rebecca (Becky) Alexis, John Flipse, "Rich" Mike Lloyd, and Tim Lamb, a Kiwi who joined the team for this race. Tim was traveling around the US after finishing his summer job as a camp counselor in Massachusetts. He reached out via a Facebook post on the LeMONs driver’s page. Despite crashing the car, he was a big help in packing up at the house and leaving the track.
Ryan, as usual, put in the fastest lap ever in Miss Vici, with a monster lap of 2:19.94. Here is a video of that lap for you to study and improve your skills.
We also have videos for each of your stints if you would like to sit for an hour and watch your stint in the car, those can be found here.2024 High Plains Drifter Videos
Scott, my nephew came out to the race. Scott, Zachary and I initially built the car and it is really great when the family is out at the track.
I have big ideas for Miss Vici for next year. The suspension seems to be dialed in, but the brakes are still a bit of an issue. We ran out of rear brakes with 15 minutes still to run. I was in the car and limped her home to the checkered flag. I plan to use a different pad from Hawk Racing and increase the size of the front rotors. I may also increase the size of the rear rotors. Additionally, I plan to get the ABS system working again. Aerodynamics is the next area where we can make improvements. If we can carry more corner speed, it will improve our lap times.
All this sounds good in November 2024, we will see what get’s done in June.
Hope to see you all racing with Bare Bones Racing in 2025.
